Judiciary blames Case backlog on shortage of officers

According to a recent study, there were about 155,400 pending cases at the different levels of the court system in Uganda.

While the reasons for this case backlog are many, the main reason is the shortage of judicial officers to hear the cases.

There have been numerous appeals to the government to recruit more judicial officers but these have largely remained unheeded as the government says it does not have the funds for the necessary recruitment.

The judiciary continues to be overburdened with the thousands of pending cases and this is beginning to have a negative ripple effect on other areas.
