Government sticks to sim-card verification deadline, gives reprieve for mobile money accounts

Government will at midnight switch off over 1.5 million sim-cards that have not yet been verified against the National ID. The minister for Information Frank Tumwebaze told a news conference this afternoon that the move is intended to strengthen national security. NTV understands that 92% of the current registered simcards account for 17.6million lines in a market of 22 million cards, putting at risk at least five million users.
