Government has asked for more time to assess the financial implication of establishment of regional tier governments and regional cities as proposed in the motion before the parliament’s Local Governments Committee.
Members of parliament including Buliisa County’s Stephen Mukitale and Nelson Lufafa of Butembe County tabled a motion urging government to operationalise article 178 of the constitution as amended in 2005 that directed the establishment of regional tiers and cities.
State Minister of Finance David Bahati and State Minister for Local government Jennifer Namuyangu informed the committee that currently government resource envelop can not sustain the regional tiers.
