BARRIERS TO TRADE: EOC, trade mark East Africa, advise on rules of origin

Eliminating today’s applied bilateral tariffs would increase intra-Africa trade by up to 15 percent, but only if rules of origin are simple and transparent. The latest study by the regional Economic community and Trade Mark East Africa recommends that regional economic community (REC) member countries for instance should move to systemwide rules of origin and avoid product-specific rules of origin.

Damsel Sali the Trade and development Expert Trade Mark East Africa, says a move to a single value added rule of nearly 40% of value added from within the community with a more lenient threshold for less developed countries.
